Lesser Megalopolis #2

5th time Yuina Higashi, 2nd Time Doug

19 encounter the haunting corpses of megalopolans that have been completely overtaken by black crystal or metal. it seems like the megalopolan's flesh has been completely overtaken by the material.

17 encounter a large section of the city that has been destroyed. rubble stretches all the way until the city's perimeter, which looks out into a view of what seems to be space.

39 encounter a SHINY TAPU BULU that is either hostile to you during a rampage (for it is frustrated it can not grow vegetation here) or a temporary ally. it rings its bell to warn those who are nearby of its presence.

38 explore an underground settlement beneath the city, found within its sewers/basements/crawl spaces, etc. friendly megalopolans exist there who will remain as neutral parties to the league or to team rocket trainers. within the settlement, there is an alarm system that is activated when ultra wormholes open or when a large ultra beast or threat (dynamax sized guzzlords, solgaleos/lunalas, necrozma, other legendaries or mythicals, etc.) is nearby.

Lesser Megalopolis

"I've read that there's actual, still sane megalopolans hidden around here." He said casually as he held out his hand, offering help over some thoroughly ruined sidewalk.

Or maybe just an excuse to hold hands.

They were back in the lesser Megalopolis, where they had experienced no small amount of grief prior.

This time, they were sticking to the streets and avoiding the dark, dangerous insides of the big buildings.

Oh, and his Orbeetles, six of them to be exact, were linked up and spread out around them, providing them with ample time to react to just about anything that may come at them.

Provided they didn't cause any disturbances, they would hopefully be able to get through this with no surprises.

Hopefully.

"Think we should try to find 'em, or avoid 'em?"

Trekking through the quiet city ruins, Yuina reached for Doug's hand as he offered it, careful over the crumbling bits of sidewalk that shifted at the disturbance of their weight.[break][break]
"Hidden? Like a settlement," Yuina wondered, she had encountered the one not yet destroyed megalopolan before, tucked away in their classroom, unable to escape lest they be consumed by those around them. She hadn't considered there could be more...[break][break]
"If we find them, could we actually do anything? We don't have a lot of resources here...," she returned... Finding anyone who might need help did sound like a venture worth taking, and while she and Doug both held a capacity to want to help those around them, what could they actually do in a ruined, desolate place like this, well away from where their influence in Hoenn actually remained?

He gave her a wry look.

"Didn't mean it like that, love." he said simply, scratching at his cheek. "For better or worse, this is their home."

The ones that remained in the city were likely not in the same group as the ones invading other universes.

As they rounded around a corner, he froze in place, eyes widening briefly as he nearly took a step back behind the wall— before realizing what he was looking at.

What had seemed like the silhouettes of those zombies crowding a broad avenue were actually... corpses. Almost completely encased in crystal and metal, flesh scarcely left, faces twisted in agony.

He gulped.

"And they have enough on their plate as is." He said, lip curling. "I'd rather not add more to it."

But if they did find the group, maybe they could get a better idea of what had gone down in there.

Right... that was a silly, and probably insensitive way for her to put it. No matter how different it was from what they themselves knew, this place used to be thriving, a city, filled with a people, just like Hoenn...[break]
"That's... yeah, you're right, I guess it's just hard to think about this place being... Not this," Yuina returned, and even that was likely insensitive too, but it wasn't wrong... The city was beyond repair in the worst ways, and it only seemed to get worse upon every expedition made. But if there was still a surviving population of megalopolans, was it worth trying to find them, and maybe trying to help?[break][break]
Keeping close to Doug, she stumbled first, and ran right into his figure as he froze at the wall they were rounding. She clutched his hand tighter, holding her breath, peering out from behind him from behind the wall. His reaction was not unmerited.[break][break]
"I've never seen anything like it...," she breathed, looking out to the black crystal that adorned the bodies strewn about the ruined infrastructure. It was a loaded thing to say, there were many things she had never seen before still at this point, but that didn't make the sight before them any less shocking. It was like a fungus in a way, having taken over most of the organic parts of a body, eating away at it until there was nothing left...[break][break]
"That crystal... It's everywhere, on every surface, in every building... Like a virus..."

Doug narrowed his eyes at the crystallized people, slowly reaching over before pausing at Yuina's mention of virus, reaching instead into his bag and pulling out several disposable gloves.

Once he had somehow fit his hand into about 4 of them, he reached over to tap the crystal, lip curling at the sensation that ran down from his bone digit to his wrist.

Solid, in a very familiar way.

"That can't be good." He mused out loud.

The Black Knight that had come from parts unknown, Necrozma... it didn't look like any germ he ever read about, but could it be...?

"We should get a move on." He said, shaking off the thought. No point in overthinking about things he lacked information on. "Don't think we're at risk or anythin', but I'm getting creeped out."

There were no reports of any explorers becoming crystal statues or catching any unknown illnesses, but he didn't intend on fucking around and becoming the first one, much less dragging Yuina into such a thing.

"I've read in the reports about a missing chunk of the city— Come on, I wanna go check it out!" He said, grabbing Yuina's hand and beginning to jog, their pokemon following behind them.

Watching carefully, quietly, Yuina didn't make any moves to get closer to the afflicted bodies that they were looking at. She almost stopped Doug from inching closer, but he moved forward before she could to tentatively investigate the body closest to them. He touched the crystal, and she felt a pang of worry at the moment of uncertainty, but he came up just fine...[break][break]
"You don't have to tell me twice...," Yuina breathed, agreement on all fronts as she pushed through the initial waves of chest pains at her spiking conern. Creeped out was an understatement still she felt like, but she was ready to keep moving. The last thing she wanted to wait around for was for one of the bodies to start moving...[break][break]
"Wait what," Yuina remarked well into already having been grabbed by the hand and moving off from the crystalized corpses.[break]
"What do you mean a chunk of the city is missing? How does that happen," surely she didn't hear him right, her pulse had been hitting her ears. An entire section of a city doesn't just vanish, right?

He just shrugged his shoulders— an elegant reply to a question he had no answer to.

"Just quoting from the report." He said, grinning Yuina's way. "It makes ya curious, yeah? Me too."

That's why they were going to check themselves.

It wasn't a short trip; lesser though it may be, mega-lo-polis lived up to its name in its sheer size, and there were no buses to be taken there.

And with the sky so dark and the skyscrapers so tall and numerous, flying was a risky endeavor, for differing reasons depending on how one chose to solve the darkness issue.

But they saw the signs way before they saw the missing chunk. Whenever they got close enough, anyway.

Rubble. Fallen buildings. Skyscrappers, torn off the ground and collapsed across kilometres and miles of city blocks. The day after tomorrow had certainly come to Megalopolis.

"Is that... the vacuum of space?" Doug asked blandly as he stared out into black pool of nothing.

The powerful floodlight he had brought along for the mission was being swallowed by the sheer nothingness before them.

"Is this city a spaceship?"

Curiosity killed the Purrloin wasn't necessarily something Yuina wanted to emulate as they worked through the city streets, looking to find this "missing chunk of the city". This wasn't the kind of place that she felt would encourage curious minds and intrigue... Not without consequences.[break][break]
The further along they got, the slower and more careful their pace as the gravity of what exactly the report might have been referring to sunk in. It was, for lack of a better term, exactly as Doug had put it. An entire gash had ripped through the city, buildings were nothing but rubble, no streets, no walkways, just... Destruction. Nothing was recognizable, it was impossible to discern what anything was or had been.[break][break]
"It's... It's like the city is being reclaimed by space... Like the destruction comes first, so that the city can be swallowed bit by bit...," Yuina breathed, not even the light Doug held could permeate the absolute gaping nothingness that lay beyond... It was stifling. It was swallowing everything, even sound it felt like, things were so horrendously quiet, until... There was a low toned, ringing sound?[break][break]
"What was that..."

"Very philosophical." He cracked feebly while still looking out into the vast emptiness of space, gulping. "And here I thought ya were a History Major."

His neck audibly cracked as he turned his head sharply in the direction of that sound, his hand glowing pink.

"Nothing good, surely." He scoffed, turning away from the depths and back towards the destroyed city.

Then, the sound came again. Louder, and clearer, this time.

Doug's brow furrowed.

"That sound..." He muttered, some of the tenseness leaving him. "That sounds familiar."

His hand snatched Yuina's, before pulling her towards the collapsed wall of one of the nearby buildings.

"Hide!"
